Help Topics

How do I get items from another library?

  • When you search the catalog with the "Books & Media" tab, you can also see items from other libraries around the state.
  • If you'd like to have one of those items sent here, just click on the "Place Hold" button in the catalog.
  • You'll need your CMC ID number to place the hold.
  • If this is your first time requesting an item, you'll need to create a password.  To do so, click on the "Reset My Password" link.  A message will be sent to your CMC email address with instructions on setting your password.

How do I find books on the shelves?

  • If you're feeling lost in the stacks, ask a staff member.  We're always happy to help!
  • The CMC libraries use the Library of Congress Classification System.
  • In the Library of Congress system, call numbers alternate between alphabetical and numerical order, like this.

Several books on a shelf. Each has a sticker at the bottom with a library of congress call number.

  • First, books are shelved alphabetically by the letter on the first line of the sticker.
  • Next, the books are arranged numerically by the number on the second line.
  • Finally, books are shelved alphabetically by the letter on the third line, then numerically by the following decimal.
