Nursing Research Tips

Effective nursing research starts with clear keywords and targeted databases. Break your topic into the PICO framework to build an efficient search. Used specialized nursing databases like CINAHL Ultimate or PubMed Central rather than generic search engines for authoritative, peer-reviewed clinical evidence.

PICO Framework

What is PICO?

PICO is a framework used mainly in evidence-based medicine and healthcare research to structure a clinical or research question. It stands for:

  • P - Population, patient, or problem: Who is the question about? (e.g., adults with Type 2 diabetes)
  • I - Intervention or indicator: What is being done or considered? (e.g., a new medication, a specific treatment, a diagnostic test)
  • C - Comparison or control: What is the intervention being compared against? (e.g., placebo, standard treatment, no intervention)
  • O- Outcome: What is the desired or effective outcome of the intervention compared to the control? (e.g., reduced blood sugar levels, mortality rate, symptom improvement)

Example:
In adults with hypertension (P), does a low-sodium diet (I) compared to a standard diet (C) reduce systolic blood pressure (O)?
